Citrus in oils - alla prima
This artwork was mostly done with a pallet knife, and was completed alla prima - meaning a 'wet on wet' use of oils (i.e., not allowing the first coats to dry before painting over them). It isn't perfect - the shadow and light is incorrect in places - but the vibrancy of the warm citrus against the cool grey and blue background is a colour combination I really like. I also like how a large, chunky utensil like a pallet knife can be used for so much detail, and that regardless of the absence of fine brush work, the image is clearly identifiable as a citrus branch with fruit.
